Non mi piace apparire in una fotografia e non mi piace ritrarmi in posizione frontale. Per le foto di schiena, invece, faccio un’eccezione. Le trovo misteriose, dotate di un fascino e di un’intimità molto particolari. In una fredda giornata di pioggia, qualche settimana fa, mi sono divertita a fotografarmi di schiena. In bianco e nero. Eccomi.

Do you practice self portraiture? Do you like it? Are you at ease in front of your camera? Me, absolutely not! I really don’t like self portrait. I don’t like being in a picture, I don’t like portraying myself in a frontal position. But I do like turning my back on the camera. I find this kind of selfie particularly mysterious and intimate. On a cold rainy day, some week ago, I had fun with portraying my back. In black and white. Here I am.

Questo post arriva con mesi e mesi di ritardo! Dovete infatti sapere che la scorsa estate ho trascorso alcuni giorni di vacanza in Spagna, girovagando per le principali città della Castiglia. Il viaggio prevedeva numerosi spostamenti a piedi in località molto, molto belle ma anche molto, molto calde! Di conseguenza, ho preferito portare con me un “bagaglio fotografico” particolarmente maneggevole, composto solo da due leggerissime toycam: la Diana Mini e la Holga caricate, rispettivamente, con pellicole in bianco e nero e a colori.
I am incredibly late with the publishing of this post! You have in fact to know that last summer I spent some of my holiday in Spain, by touring the main cities of Castile. During my trip, I often had to walk through very, very beautiful cities with very, very hot temperatures. So, I thought to leave by bringing with me only two super light toycams: Diana Mini and Holga which were respectively loaded with black and white and colour film.

Come mio solito, non ho fotografato moltissimo – a volte penso che, proprio per questa mia tendenza, il mio approccio alla fotografia non sia corretto. Che dovrei, cioè, fotografare di più. Ma se quello che vedo non mi convince, o se mi accorgo di non riuscire a trasmetterlo secondo l’idea che ho nella testa, lascio perdere e non scatto proprio. Tutto sommato, però, in questo viaggio ho raccolto un bel po’ di materiale che, per impegni vari, è rimasto nella mitica cartella draft per tutto questo tempo. Ora, siccome pubblicare tante immagini in stream sarebbe stato un po’ sconclusionato, ho pensato di scegliere solo quelle che preferivo e di presentarle sottoforma di dittico.
As usual, I didn’t take hundreds of pictures, but just the number I thought it was right for me – sometime, for this tendency of mine, I can not help but thinking that maybe, my personal approach towards photography is wrong because I should photograph much more. But if I am not convinced by what I see, or if I am not able to depict it according to the idea that I have in my mind, I just quit and don’t photograph at all. Having said that, though, on this trip I was able to gather some stuff that, for various reasons, has remained in my draft folder so far. Now, since I didn’t want to create a chaotic stream of pictures on this post, I just chose my favourite ones and I coupled them into diptyches.

Se vi state chiedendo a cosa si riferisce il titolo del post, la risposta é: al compleanno del mio blog! E’ infatti da un anno, precisamente dal 23 ottobre 2011, che é cominciato questo mio viaggio attraverso la fotografia analogica, istantanea e lo-fi. E tutto grazie alla mia amatissima Ferrania Eura che, come ormai saprete, é stata la prima vintage camera che ho provato e che mi ha spinto ad appassionarmi al mondo analogico e a sperimentare forme di fotografia “alternative”. Come ben sapete mi piace la pellicola, le sue eventuali imperfezioni, la sua grana più o meno grossa. E poi mi piacciono le foto sfocate e poco definite, l’imprevedibilità delle toycam, i light leaks, le bruciature, l’effetto dreamy delle Polaroid e tutto ciò che é ben lontano dalla perfezione digitale. Questo é ciò che ho sperimentato durante questo primo anno e che intendo ancora condividere con voi in questo mio blog.
If you are wondering what the title of the post is about, the answer is: my blog birthday! My personal journey through analogue, instant and lo-fi photography, in fact, began one year ago, on October 23rd 2011 to be precise, thanks to a very special camera called Ferrania Eura. As you know, this has been the first vintage camera that I tried and that has changed forever the perspective and idea that I had about photography. As you have noticed, I love film, its potential flaws, its (big) grain. And then I love blurred photos, toycams umpredictability, light leaks, burns, the dreamy effect of Polaroid and everything which is far from digital perfection. This is what I have been experiencing in this first year and that I will keep on sharing here with you.

A questo punto del post ci si aspetterebbe la classica foto del muffin con tanto di candelina. Ma io non avevo muffin a disposizione in questi giorni e, ahimé, nemmeno una fetta di torta! Così, per rimediare, ho deciso di postare un dittico realizzato con i miei ultimi acquisti instant: una Polaroid SX70 e le nuove pellicole PX70 Color Protection. Non vi dico la comodità di non dover schermare la foto quando esce. Questo cambia davvero il modo di fotografare con le Impossible.
